Lambeth Pavilion

New facilities for horticultural staff at St. Mary's Garden in Lambeth, London

Type: Competition

Location: London (UK)

Year: 2021

Design team: Litote

Area: 60 sqm

The pavilion, located in the south corner of the St Mary’s Gardens, acts as a “hinge” between the garden and the rich and complex urban realm around it. The pavilion becomes the opportunity to relocate one of the entrances to the garden closer to the south-west corner, where an open pedestrian area will be created, enhancing the garden accessibility and visibility. The pavilion embraces the garden with a gentle curved facade, which opens to the outdoor nature and merges with it reflecting and mirroring it. Along the street, the facade becomes part of the perimeter, and the motif of the brick wall recalls the geometry of the former alms-house, bringing to sight historic memory and cathcing the attention of the public.
